Mango Tree Grafting

Mango tree propagation can be accomplished by planting seeds or by grafting mango trees.

Mango trees propagated by seed take longer to produce fruit and are more difficult to manage than those propagated by grafting; thus, grafting is the preferred method of propagation.

Grafting mango trees is the process of transferring a mature, bearing tree or scion to a separate seedling known as rootstock. The scion becomes the tree’s canopy, and the rootstock becomes the lower trunk and root system.

Grafting is simple if you keep a few things in mind. Use only healthy scions or bud wood with active buds in addition to healthy rootstock.

Let’s look at how to graft a mango tree:

Step 1: Choose rootstock that is healthy, strong, and free of pests. The rootstock functions as both the future mango tree’s rooting system and a portion of its stem.

Step 2: Remove the scions, It is critical to obtain high-quality scions for grafting, as these will grow into the productive crown of your future mango tree. Find a mother tree that is highly productive and healthy, and is of the desired variety and quality. Choose scions that are as thick as a pencil and have an active, healthy terminal bud from the ends of the branches.

Step 3: When preparing rootstock for top or wedge grafting, make sure the scions and rootstock are the same thickness. Cut the upper end of the rootstock through to a suitable depth.

Step 4: Preparing the scion for grafting: Trim the scion to the desired length. Sharpen the cut lower end of the scion to a V-shape with the scalpel or razor blade by removing wood from both sides of the scion.

Step 5: Connect the rootstock and scion by sliding the sharpened end of the scion into the slot cut in the rootstock. Insert the scion as deeply as possible into the rootstock’s cut and align the two parts.

Step 6: Cover the point of union to keep the scion and rootstock in place until it heals. Wrap the grafting tape or polythene strip tightly around the union and knot or inter-loop the two ends. Check that the wrapping is sufficiently tight and that the scion does not move out of the union while wrapping.

Finally, the mango sapling is ready to be planted and grow into a beautiful tree.
